As featured on the South Florida Section PGA website, Lynn Myers, PGA Assistant Professional at Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club has been awarded the South Florida PGA Player Development Award.

Lynn Myers holding the South Florida PGA Player Development Award

The Player Development Award recognizes a PGA Professional who has made extraordinary contributions and achievements in the area of player development.

“I am delighted and honored to receive the Player Development Award,” said Myers. “The South Florida Section is so strong and has many talented professionals. Each of us works on a daily basis to share our love of the game and help more players participate.”

Myers’ contagious love for the game of golf has been the centerpiece for success throughout her 30-year career as a PGA Professional, helping her gain trust with each player she works with.

Since beginning at Harbor Ridge Yacht and Country Club in 2002, Myers has developed a roadmap to building successful golfers, starting with beginner-level programming and a pathway to build a young player through personal support and enthusiasm.

In addition to Myers’ successful junior programming, she has increased the number of lessons at Harbor Ridge by 17 percent in 2020 and 25 percent in 2021 and has brought many new players to the game, including many females.

Myers has also implemented programs at Harbor Ridge to increase player fitness, catering to older members in an effort to create lifelong golfers. Through all the programs she offers at Harbor Ridge, Myers has cultivated a community where each golfer is included at her facility.

“Thank you for the opportunity to stand with the other award winners, both past and present, who have inspired me,” continued Myers. “I truly appreciate the award and the work of both the Section and the committees to make it happen.”

The PGA Professional Development Award is one of the South Florida PGA’s annual awards. The SFPGA honored Myers during a private celebration in front of family and friends at Harbor Ridge Yacht and Country Club last week.

Breast cancer awareness is synonymous with the color pink, symbolizing hope, strength and remembrance.

These attributes are the driving force behind the GoPink! fundraiser in Martin County. Founded over 20 years ago by members of the Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club, the event honors breast cancer survivors and those who have passed away from the disease.

The annual GoPink! golf event and auction took place from February 6th-8th and raised more than $92,000 to benefit the Cleveland Clinic Breast Health Navigator Program in Martin County. The philanthropically funded service provides information, resources and assistance to more than 200 breast cancer patients each year.

The Breast Health Navigator Program supports the mission of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, specifically for breast cancer research and care. The program is an integral part of the personalized care patients receive at the Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health, providing guidance and counseling to women planning their future care. It also provides no-cost mammograms and related services to women who do not have health insurance.

Several new community events were added to GoPink! this year, including a pickleball tournament, a “Best in Pink” tennis attire contest, and a “Pink Your Pooch” dog kerchief event at the Dog Park. More than 250 golfers took to the greens for the charity golf tournament, which featured a luncheon, cocktail party, and silent and live auctions.

Why I Support GoPink!

The GoPink! fundraiser has special meaning for many in the Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club community. Some of the event organizers shared their inspiration for supporting the fundraiser and raising awareness for breast cancer.

“I chair and support GoPink! because I feel everyone has been impacted by breast cancer. My husband’s sister lost her battle at 62 and I had an up-close experience of what it was like, as she lived with us through her last six months. My tribute to her is why I give back. I am hopeful that the funds we raise help women who are unable to afford mammograms and other treatments through the Breast Navigator fund at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health. Our community at Harbour Ridge gives in memory of Emily Crandall, and we hope this keeps her memory alive.” –Becca McCoy

“I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 25 and she was only 58. I think all we can do is try to provide caring and dignified treatment while people fight their fight. That’s what we are doing for the people in this area.” – Beth Warner

“Supporting the GoPink! the campaign has a lot to do with personal reasons and experience. My mother died from cancer in 1993 and my sister—diagnosed with breast cancer over 30 years ago and then ovarian cancer 4 years ago—just recently passed away in October 2021. What I learned about GoPink! is how very personal it is to the people of Harbour Ridge. There is passion about what was the beginning of the event over 20 years ago, the history of the event and the purpose of the event. It’s really special.” –Val Lesniak

Combining the elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, the sport of pickleball has grown tremendously in popularity over the past two years. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, 4.2 million Americans were playing pickleball in 2020, a 21.3% increase from the year prior. Keeping up with the popularity of this booming sport, Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club recently added eight pickleball courts to their community. Here’s a closer look at the exciting new addition to the Harbour Ridge lifestyle.

Get to Know the Sport of Pickleball

Fun, social, and friendly, pickleball is an overall simple game that is easy to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced game for experienced players. While it has increased in popularity lately, the sport has been around since 1965. Pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, in doubles or singles formats. The game is played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, paddle, and a plastic ball with holes.

Due to pickleball’s simplicity and ease of getting started, the sport has also become extremely popular within country club communities. “Our Members at Harbour Ridge really enjoy getting together on the courts,” says Fabio Vasconcellos, Director of Racquet Sports at Harbour Ridge. “Pickleball a great workout. It is easier on the knees as there’s less running than tennis. Many choose to play in groups as well, offering plentiful opportunities for social interaction and friendly competition between residents.”

Stay Energetic at Harbour Ridge’s New Courts

Recently opened in December 2021, the pickleball facilities have already become a favored activity, keeping Members energetic and motivated. The area includes eight courts, four of which are lighted for night play. Harbour Ridge plans to continuously expand upon the pickleball program by offering more playing opportunities through clinics, lessons, social and competitive events. These courts are a welcoming addition to the Lakeside Amenity Center, which already includes nine Har-Tru tennis courts, an aquatics center, a spacious fitness center, physical therapy, a puppy park, and a full-service spa and salon.

Along with the introduction of the new courts, the staff at Harbour Ridge have already planned numerous pickleball events. February events include a pickleball Go Pink charity round-robin on Sunday, February 6th as well as a Pickle & Pizza round-robin event on the 22nd. Additionally, March 5-6 will be the first pickleball championship on the courts. Lessons, clinics, round-robins, pickleball tangos, and more are also being planned, ensuring Members have ample opportunities to try out the sport.

Newly added to the event this year was a Wine and Crystal Raffle, in which each person buying a ticket was assured of winning a bottle of wine or an accessory guaranteed to please any oenophile.

Said Cecilia Lewis, luncheon chair, “When I sit down at this busy time of year to reflect on my blessings, one of the things I’m most grateful for is the chance to be part of 4Cs to help make a difference in the lives of the children of our community.”
