The game of tennis has been around since the 1870s and is a favorite sport among many Americans. Here at Harbour Ridge, members enjoy pro tennis tips while playing on the nine Har-Tru® tennis courts and participating in weekly socials, round-robin tournaments and men’s and women’s team competitions. The Harbour Ridge tennis program also offers one-of-a-kind training programs developed by the Peter Burwash International (PBI) training program. Globally renowned, the PBI program has been involved with professional tennis management since 1975. We sat down with the Harbour Ridge Tennis Pro, Fabio Vasconcellos, to get his advice on how to up your game. Here are his six must-follow tips.

Make Contact

There is a misconception that all contact sports must be physical and aggressive, such as football and hockey. Many people do not realize that tennis is a contact sport. Players may not be tackling one another, but they are making contact with the ball by using the tennis racquet. I like to educate people about the three steps of the tennis swing. The swing consists of the backswing, making contact and then the follow-through. Contact is the most vital part of the game because, without it, there is no game.

Know your Minimum Potential

Minimum potential is another vital part of the game. Right in the sweet spot of the racquet is minimum potential energy. When a ball makes contact with this area on the racquet, it will soar with speed and power. And this happens without the help of movement, swinging or a powerful backhand. Next time you’re practicing, see how little you will have to work with your racquet.

Take Advantage of Minimum Potential

With the understanding of the concepts of contact and minimum potential, players can hit the ball with precision and speed. When getting ready to return a hard serve there’s little time for your mind to process what is going on, as opposed to a slower groundstroke. Oftentimes, there is not enough time to prepare for the contact and complete a stroke with all three motions. Players take advantage of the knowledge of minimum potential by reacting on instinct and hitting the ball on the sweet spot of the racquet. If players utilize this tactic long enough, it will become muscle memory.

Use Your Index Finger

It is not always easy to make contact with the ball and some days are more challenging than others. I always teach players to place their opposite index finger on the racquet strings closest to the handle. By doing this, players will know where the racquet head is and the angle of its face. Knowing where the face of the racquet is, makes it easier to adjust to external conditions such as wind and speed. This knowledge is crucial on those days when contact seems impossible.

Add an Underspin

For those looking to advance their tennis skills, I would recommend adding an underspin to your forehand stroke. This shot bounces the ball lower, still making it move forward and serves multiple strategical purposes. An underspin can mess up your opponent’s rhythm and exploit their weaknesses. It can be hit effectively from both sides of the body, on forehands and backhands equally.

Play Mini-Tennis

Mini-tennis is the perfect way to master control in tennis. With two to four players, this game takes place within the service boxes of a court. By playing within a short distance of one another, players will develop a feel for the ball and improve skills like accuracy and precision. Playing mini-tennis also allows players to become more familiar with the tennis equipment and the game itself.

Evolution of an Individual Sport

Traditionally, golf has always been played as an individual sport. The independent nature of this game has historically driven athletes to compete by themselves. Players who golf individually are scored on their performance alone, their score and rank do not rely on any other golfer. Many professional golfers have reached mass success by playing independently. Even though the customs of this sport appear to be deeply rooted in tradition, the game of golf has begun to evolve. Discovering that they enjoy the sense of comradery and fellowship when playing on a team, golfers are choosing to compete in teams rather than by themselves. There is a strong sense of unity and collaboration when playing on a team, and players are starting to find this mentality refreshing. Golfing on a team also creates a more easygoing and leisurely atmosphere to enjoy with their friends and families.

Rise of Team-Based Tournaments

Rapidly gaining popularity, team-based tournaments are often differentiated by the number of golfers on a team. Teams can be divided a multitude of ways: pairs, groups of fours, couples (man and woman), and various other group formats. Upon completing the course or tournament, the team’s scores are calculated by taking the top two individual player scores from each hole and finding the overall average. These team-based tournaments serve as an excellent introduction for amateur golfers wanting to compete. By competing on a team, amateur golfers can learn how a tournament is structured while simultaneously golfing with more experienced players. The PNC Championship is one of many renowned team-based tournaments. Played at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, 20 Major Champions team up and golf with a family member, usually a child or parent. The championship provides an opportunity for professionals to share part of their lives with their families in a fun, yet competitive setting.

Community Connections Through Teams

While members enjoy playing golf independently, Harbour Ridge has found that playing on a team is a great way for golfers to connect and engage in the community. The private golf club hosts a myriad of team-based tournaments throughout the year on two USGA recognized, championship golf courses, designed by Pete & P.B. Dye and Joe Lee, and redesigned by Bobby Weed in 2018. Team-based tournaments are held throughout the year, some of which members are encouraged to play alongside a guest. These competitions range anywhere from single-day member-guest tournaments to member-only championship tournaments. A favorite among members is the annual Husband & Wife Championship where couples go head-to-head. In addition to annual team-based tournaments, Harbour Ridge members enjoy weekly tournaments in which different days of the week are designated for ladies, men, and couple’s teams. Regarding this past season, Director of Golf, Joe Beezup, stated that “the increased level of activity on our golf courses hasn’t been seen since the early 2000s.” Because of these team-based tournaments and competitions, the Harbour Ridge golf community is thriving and has never been more connected.

What are those odds? 67 Million To 1 to be exact.

The average American golfer makes a hole-in-one once every 12,000 rounds. On Saturday, May 8, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club member Patsy Harris, defeated those odds by a long shot.

Patsy, a member at Harbour Ridge since 2014, decided to start her day off with a final 18-hole round of golf for the 2021 season. Little did she know it would end in 67 million to 1 odds! She teed off the River Ridge #10 at 8:16 a.m. and just under an hour later, using a 5 hybrid from 105 yards, she made her second-ever hole-in-one on hole #14. Once Patsy got to the 7th hole at 11:35 a.m., she thought it best to use her 6 hybrid from 102 yards. She swings, she…SINKS IT! Incredibly, she successfully sunk her second (and third-ever) hole-in-one; same round, same course, same day!

Patsy, who calls herself a “bogey” golfer with a handicap of 19, said, “I am always just happy to clear the hazards and get the ball on the green; none of our Par 3s are easy!” My golf group, ‘The Queen of the Greens’, was so excited after the first hole-in-one — high fiving and taking photos. “After the second, I was in shock!” Members of her foursome that day included Jill Kelly, Barbara Alesi, and Elaine McCusker.

Patsy also said she and her husband Andy are a golfing family. They have been playing golf together for nearly 50 years. Their two sons, David and Daniel, are single-digit golfers who have a total of 3-hole-in-ones between them (GO, MOM!). She’s proud to now have passed their love for golf down to their four grandsons, ages 13, 10, 9, and 6. The 13-year-old is already on track to catch up with Grandma with his first hole-in-one this past November. “Golfing is a passion for me—I love it in all its forms, and I am still working on my game.”

The Pete and P.B. Dye designed River Ridge course has hosted numerous qualifying rounds for USGA championships, including the U.S. Open. The River Ridge course boasts one of the highest slope ratings in all of Florida, and can be played from any of five sets of tees to accommodate all handicap levels. Like fitness, homebuyers today are drawn to additional health and wellness features like Harbour Ridge’s conscious menus offering mouth-watering salads, juice and energizing smoothies, and amenities that pamper. At the Spa and Salon at Lakeside, residents enjoy European-style spa services with a full complement of treatments available for the entire family.

On-property Entertaining

Those who wish to “go to the office” without leaving home often seek out this option in their social lives too. As a result, private dining rooms and event spaces are becoming more popular in 2021. At Harbour Ridge, residents can enjoy a world-class meal without leaving the Club. The Grille Room offers Sunday brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks in a casual, comfortable setting that encourages easy conversation with impeccable service. There are plenty of Instagram and Facebook photos that highlight the typical South Florida lifestyle. The sun and the beach take center stage as the backdrop for family photos while escaping the winter cold. However, at Harbour Ridge, a different kind of Florida beauty compels your followers to hit the “love” button. It is rare to see this type of pristine “Old Florida” beauty combined with modern, state-of-the-art amenities and scenic nature. It is all mixed together to create the truly remarkable community that is Harbour Ridge. See what makes Harbour Ridge the ultimate photo-worthy destination:

Natural Beauty

Harbour Ridge is a certified Audubon community. It is meticulously designed to highlight Florida’s natural landscape within 885 acres and a two-mile-long riverline along the St. Lucie River. Whether you are at the National Geographic-worthy Rookery to see thousands of egrets taking flight at first light or exploring the nature trail along the riverfront, there are plenty of places to capture the essence of environmental preservation. Even on the golf course, players will see the beauty of the golden marshes and the quiet water of the river winding by the pristine course.

Small-Town Charm

Harbour Ridge is located in the picturesque village-like city of Palm City and neighbors across the St. Lucie River from the city of Stuart. Stuart’s quaint and charming walkable historic downtown is filled with shopping, restaurants, a gorgeous waterfront, boutique hotels, and inns. This small-town charm immediately resonates with visitors and residents and can be easily explored by a quick water taxi ride across the St. Lucie River. Historic Downtown Stuart has garnered national attention as it was named winner of the 2020 Great Places in Florida award, as well as the 2016 Happiest Seaside Town in America.

Wide Open Spaces

Harbour Ridge is recognized for 20 years of certification as an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary, a testament to the community’s valiant efforts in local wildlife conservation and natural preservation. The Rookery proves that Florida’s wildlife lives alongside humanity at its own pace. Catching a glimpse of dolphins swimming by in the river, watching sandhill cranes stride across a green, or witnessing a bobcat peer out from behind a bush are frequent occurrences at Harbour Ridge. A collection of mangroves on the water’s edge, The Rookery serves as a shelter and feeding spot for many of Florida’s animals, but unique to this community is the abundance of egrets that take flight at sunrise and return every sunset.

Most of the land area surrounding Harbour Ridge looks untouched by time. Driving around you will see undeveloped areas that are still filled with old Spanish Oak and other natural flora that perfectly depict the “Old Florida” beauty. Most of these untouched wooded areas are state nature preserves. For a length of the Treasure Coast beaches, you’ll be transported to a time before anyone touched the sands of Florida. It’s easy to find wide-open spaces and plenty of room to grab a piece of nature to yourself; something we’ve all found more valuable these days.

It wasn’t until she moved to Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club that Lois Fraser bought her first “real” camera. Mrs. Fraser became a photographer as a way to look deeper into the world around her and share that sense of discovery with others. Most of what she has learned is through her involvement with the Harbour Ridge Birding Society, which she is now the president of, doing a lot of reading about nature, and she also started a nature blog (Nature Notes) to share her discoveries. She is even on her way to becoming a Florida Master Naturalist too.

Her photography really gives you a sense of the diversity of wildlife and how they have made their home at Harbour Ridge and their daily lives as “Members.” You can see the cranes pecking for worms on the fairways, otters have a casual conversation in the pickerelweed, and black skimmers doing aerial gymnastic-like moves as they skim for fish.

photography collage of a sandhill crane pair, two otters, and a black skimmer bird

“Looking through the lens of my camera helped me discover the diversity of wildlife here at Harbour Ridge. That made me curious about each of the species I was photographing, as well as the habitats that support them,” says Mrs. Fraser on photographing around the community.

Although the birds in her backyard were one of her initial inspirations to pick up a camera, Mrs. Fraser’s photography also ranges from all types of wildlife from a peninsula cooter turtle making its way to another pond to a dragonfly resting on a branch to anoles “doing the dewlap.”

Size does not matter either as she has also focused on the local osprey at the top of the food chain all the way down to a sweat bee pollinating the flowers in her yard…There is nothing that she doesn’t capture!

photography collage of two opsrey and a sweat bee on a flower

“I feel fortunate every day to live in a place where I can drive around in my golf cart and find so many interesting things to photograph. Nature at Harbour Ridge is beautiful at first glance, but when you start looking more closely, it’s truly amazing!” says Mrs. Fraser.

It’s no secret that Harbour Ridge is home to nature enthusiasts. With two miles of waterfront and 885 acres of unspoiled beauty, this Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary-certified community offers a level of privacy and a connection with nature that is unmatched. There are many different ways the residents interact with the natural surroundings, but Lois Fraser enjoys using the lens of her camera to view, capture and learn more about her community’s natural beauty.

While the holidays looked a little different this year, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club went above and beyond to provide their members with a jolly and safe, holiday season. The community quickly transformed itself into a winter wonderland. Residents decorated their “village” entrances with wreaths, holiday decorations and lights. You could even find reindeer wearing a mask! Even with the current social distancing guidelines, members at Harbour Ridge were still able to come together and celebrate the holiday season together.

The festivities started at the beginning of the month with the Holiday Golf Cart Parade and lighting of the Clubhouse. Members lined up at Lakeside Fitness Center with their golf carts decked out with extravagant Christmas decorations to put together the most festive cart imaginable. Golf carts were wrapped with lights, garland and ribbon and some were even topped with holiday inflatables. The parade route concluded at the Clubhouse where they joined other members and socially distanced outside to enjoy a holiday cocktail and watched the full lighting of the Clubhouse and Dockside Christmas tree.

Keeping traditions alive, there was a little twist on the Annual Bring-a-Gift event. As members in the parade arrived at the Clubhouse, they each dropped off their unwrapped toy to be donated to local charities.

Harbour Ridge Golf Cart Parade

The holiday season at Harbour Ridge wouldn’t be complete without a Holiday Boat Parade! The festive evening kicked-off with an enjoyable dinner at the Clubhouse and then moved closer to the water at one of the three marinas. Members lined the riverside trail to see fellow Harbour Ridge boaters parade by for a bright display of holiday lights. Just like the golf carts, there was not an inch of any boat that wasn’t decorated. There were even some Christmas carolers there to fill with air with holiday cheer as the boats lit up the St. Lucie River.

The festivities don’t stop there, and the best is still to come! Harbour Ridge is ready to say goodbye to 2020 and bring in 2021 with a bang. Members can celebrate the New Year socially-distant in their own homes with New Year’s Eve party boxes filled with all the NYE essentials: party hats, streamers, noisemakers, a bottle of champagne and a chef-prepared three-course meal. There will of course be fireworks from the Golden Marsh course to welcome 2021.

Already looking ahead to next year, the member events calendar is filled with events from golf tournaments like the member annual Go Pink! Tournament, to supporting the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health Foundation Breast Cancer Navigator Program or the Yacht Club’s all-new annual fishing tournament. We can’t wait to see what else 2021 brings!

Harbour Ridge Realty had a very successful year! Despite all the distractions of 2020, Harbour Ridge and the Treasure Coast real estate markets are strong. With thousands of snowbirds relocating from the highly taxed and densely-populated cities up north, Harbour Ridge is the perfect place to call home. We are a community where resident members have the peace of mind of a gated club community, can be active outdoors – golf, boating, or playing tennis – and safely enjoy all that Harbour Ridge offers!

Harbour Ridge Realty, our onsite real estate team has been very busy, with several residences currently under contract and new listings becoming available in the coming weeks. At the end of September, the team celebrated having the highest-selling condominium since 2009, based on MLS sales data for condos. Each week the team = shares a new virtual tour of one of our current real estate listings. With this collection of virtual tours, potential homebuyers have the opportunity to walk-thru and experience properties available for sale from a safe distance.

“One of the key indicators that the market within our community is also robust is the numerous potential buyers renting this season to experience the spectacular life at Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club” says Christy Bearse.

Christy Bearse leads the Harbour Ridge Realty team, recently taking the helm as the on-site Real Estate Managing Broker. Her extensive experience specializing in golf communities and waterfront residential properties in the Treasure Coast has already made her a great asset to the team. She is working hard to promote the Harbour Ridge lifestyle and further strengthen the Harbour Ridge Realty brand.

Our community offers a wide variety of real estate. There is a property for everyone within 28 different villages within the community. Each village is unique with residences ranging from condominiums and patio homes, to single-family and custom homes. We have each type of property available for sale currently, providing future resident Members with multiple options to suit their needs.

Harbour Ridge is a haven from the global pandemic where resident Members are still enjoying life safely! With tons of outdoor areas to explore both on land and on the water, Members are able to continue with their daily lives—with the addition of staying 6 feet apart and wearing a mask.
