Breast cancer awareness is synonymous with the color pink, symbolizing hope, strength and remembrance.

These attributes are the driving force behind the GoPink! fundraiser in Martin County. Founded over 20 years ago by members of the Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club, the event honors breast cancer survivors and those who have passed away from the disease.

The annual GoPink! golf event and auction took place from February 6th-8th and raised more than $92,000 to benefit the Cleveland Clinic Breast Health Navigator Program in Martin County. The philanthropically funded service provides information, resources and assistance to more than 200 breast cancer patients each year.

The Breast Health Navigator Program supports the mission of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, specifically for breast cancer research and care. The program is an integral part of the personalized care patients receive at the Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health, providing guidance and counseling to women planning their future care. It also provides no-cost mammograms and related services to women who do not have health insurance.

Several new community events were added to GoPink! this year, including a pickleball tournament, a “Best in Pink” tennis attire contest, and a “Pink Your Pooch” dog kerchief event at the Dog Park. More than 250 golfers took to the greens for the charity golf tournament, which featured a luncheon, cocktail party, and silent and live auctions.

Why I Support GoPink!

The GoPink! fundraiser has special meaning for many in the Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club community. Some of the event organizers shared their inspiration for supporting the fundraiser and raising awareness for breast cancer.

“I chair and support GoPink! because I feel everyone has been impacted by breast cancer. My husband’s sister lost her battle at 62 and I had an up-close experience of what it was like, as she lived with us through her last six months. My tribute to her is why I give back. I am hopeful that the funds we raise help women who are unable to afford mammograms and other treatments through the Breast Navigator fund at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health. Our community at Harbour Ridge gives in memory of Emily Crandall, and we hope this keeps her memory alive.” –Becca McCoy

“I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 25 and she was only 58. I think all we can do is try to provide caring and dignified treatment while people fight their fight. That’s what we are doing for the people in this area.” – Beth Warner

“Supporting the GoPink! the campaign has a lot to do with personal reasons and experience. My mother died from cancer in 1993 and my sister—diagnosed with breast cancer over 30 years ago and then ovarian cancer 4 years ago—just recently passed away in October 2021. What I learned about GoPink! is how very personal it is to the people of Harbour Ridge. There is passion about what was the beginning of the event over 20 years ago, the history of the event and the purpose of the event. It’s really special.” –Val Lesniak

Combining the elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, the sport of pickleball has grown tremendously in popularity over the past two years. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, 4.2 million Americans were playing pickleball in 2020, a 21.3% increase from the year prior. Keeping up with the popularity of this booming sport, Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club recently added eight pickleball courts to their community. Here’s a closer look at the exciting new addition to the Harbour Ridge lifestyle.

Get to Know the Sport of Pickleball

Fun, social, and friendly, pickleball is an overall simple game that is easy to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced game for experienced players. While it has increased in popularity lately, the sport has been around since 1965. Pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, in doubles or singles formats. The game is played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, paddle, and a plastic ball with holes.

To learn more about the new Pickleball Courts

Due to pickleball’s simplicity and ease of getting started, the sport has also become extremely popular within country club communities. “Our Members at Harbour Ridge really enjoy getting together on the courts,” says Fabio Vasconcellos, Director of Racquet Sports at Harbour Ridge. “Pickleball a great workout. It is easier on the knees as there’s less running than tennis. Many choose to play in groups as well, offering plentiful opportunities for social interaction and friendly competition between residents.”

Stay Energetic at Harbour Ridge’s New Courts

Recently opened in December 2021, the pickleball facilities have already become a favored activity, keeping Members energetic and motivated. The area includes eight courts, four of which are lighted for night play. Harbour Ridge plans to continuously expand upon the pickleball program by offering more playing opportunities through clinics, lessons, social and competitive events. These courts are a welcoming addition to the Lakeside Amenity Center, which already includes nine Har-Tru tennis courts, an aquatics center, a spacious fitness center, physical therapy, a puppy park, and a full-service spa and salon.

Along with the introduction of the new courts, the staff at Harbour Ridge have already planned numerous pickleball events. February events include a pickleball Go Pink charity round-robin on Sunday, February 6th as well as a Pickle & Pizza round-robin event on the 22nd. Additionally, March 5-6 will be the first pickleball championship on the courts. PALM CITY, FLORIDA – Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club has retained its designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. Tim Cann, the Club’s Director of Greens and Grounds, led the effort to maintain sanctuary status on this course. Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2000 and is one of over 900 courses in the world to currently be designated as such.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, Mexico, and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program.

“Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for preserving the natural heritage of the area by protecting the local watershed and providing a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,” said Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International.

“To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas,” explained Kane. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. Courses go through a recertification process every three years.

Audubon International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Troy, NY. After a long year of seclusion and a renewed focus on healthy living, many people are searching for ways to stay active. Tennis is one sport experiencing a new wave of activity, and robust Club programs are adding to the upward swing. According to an annual study by the Physical Activity Council, U.S. tennis participation in 2020 surged 22% from the year prior. This added close to 21.64 million players, up from 4 million in 2019. But why are so many people choosing tennis as their new sport of choice?

Tennis and Club Sports See Increased Activity

The Physical Activity Council studies also showed team sports and indoor gym-based activities lost participants over the past few years. Instead, people gravitated towards outdoor and individual activities like camping and hiking, where they could remain socially distant from others. With over 6.78 million new players, tennis also stands out with the highest rate of growth among traditional sports. Compared to other top sports, tennis can not only be played outdoors, but also has significant spaces between each player. This allows players to be socially distant from one another while also getting their exercise in.

Desirable Health Benefits

Compared to the normal gym workout, tennis is a beneficial and enjoyable way to stay active for people of all ages. Young children learn teamwork, sportsmanship, strategic thinking and problem-solving. Adults and seniors achieve cardiovascular fitness and stronger, healthier bones. It can also help players of all ages achieve a stronger sense of balance, coordination, reaction time, and agility.

A New Way to Socialize

“Our Members have really enjoyed getting together on the courts,” says Fabio Vasconcellos, Director of Tennis at Harbour Ridge. “Getting in a good workout is great for a healthy lifestyle, but friendly competition and social interaction are delivering valuable mental benefits to our players.”

Industry experts agree tennis has great benefits for mental, social, and emotional health. Laughter and fun combined with smashing tennis balls across the court can help manage stress levels and clear the mind.

What are those odds? 67 Million To 1 to be exact.

The average American golfer makes a hole-in-one once every 12,000 rounds. On Saturday, May 8, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club member Patsy Harris, defeated those odds by a long shot.

Patsy, a member at Harbour Ridge since 2014, decided to start her day off with a final 18-hole round of golf for the 2021 season. Little did she know it would end in 67 million to 1 odds! She teed off the River Ridge #10 at 8:16 a.m. and just under an hour later, using a 5 hybrid from 105 yards, she made her second-ever hole-in-one on hole #14. Once Patsy got to the 7th hole at 11:35 a.m., she thought it best to use her 6 hybrid from 102 yards. She swings, she…SINKS IT! Incredibly, she successfully sunk her second (and third-ever) hole-in-one; same round, same course, same day!

Patsy, who calls herself a “bogey” golfer with a handicap of 19, said, “I am always just happy to clear the hazards and get the ball on the green; none of our Par 3s are easy!” My golf group, ‘The Queen of the Greens’, was so excited after the first hole-in-one — high fiving and taking photos. “After the second, I was in shock!” Members of her foursome that day included Jill Kelly, Barbara Alesi, and Elaine McCusker.

Patsy also said she and her husband Andy are a golfing family. They have been playing golf together for nearly 50 years. Their two sons, David and Daniel, are single-digit golfers who have a total of 3-hole-in-ones between them (GO, MOM!). She’s proud to now have passed their love for golf down to their four grandsons, ages 13, 10, 9, and 6. The 13-year-old is already on track to catch up with Grandma with his first hole-in-one this past November. “Golfing is a passion for me—I love it in all its forms, and I am still working on my game.”

The Pete and P.B. Dye designed River Ridge course has hosted numerous qualifying rounds for USGA championships, including the U.S. Open. The River Ridge course boasts one of the highest slope ratings in all of Florida, and can be played from any of five sets of tees to accommodate all handicap levels.
