What better way to enjoy your friends or sharpen your focus than out in the South Florida sun, playing a set of tennis at Harbour Ridge. Harbour Ridge’s tennis facilities are second to none; the tennis program is very active, with weekly socials, round robin tournaments, and men’s and women’s tennis team competitions. This summer, Harbour Ridge is offering world-class instruction and three, one-hour private lessons for just $165.

The Tennis staff at Harbour Ridge brings with them training programs developed by the Peter Burwash International (PBI) training program. PBI has been the leader in professional tennis management since 1975. Residents of Harbour Ridge benefit from PBI training right at our own club, with the help of Harbour Ridge’s highly trained, specialized staff.

Social events revolving around tennis are common, and the tennis center is a hub of activity at the Club. The well-appointed tennis complex includes shaded areas between the eight Har-Tru courts and one stadium exhibition, the highest grade of clay court available today.

After your lesson head inside the state-of-the-art clubhouse and restock all of your tennis needs. The fully-equipped tennis and gift shop provides Harbour Ridge residents with everything they need to improve their game or just look good doing it! Everything from instruction and support to equipment and clothing is available at the tennis shop.

A budding, yet friendly rivalry on the water in the past few years has been the competition between kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Each provide their own list of advantages and disadvantages but the question becomes, which one is best suited for you? Let us break it down for you!

Sitting is more stable than standing—something about gravity. You’re typically more likely to fall off a SUP than capsize a kayak, especially in windy or choppy conditions. On the other hand, it’s easier to get back on a SUP than a kayak.

Advantage: Kayak

This all depends on the specific model of kayak or SUP. Long sea kayaks are better suited for tracking in a straight line, while short whitewater kayaks can snap around and turn very quickly. Likewise with SUPs: some are better in surf than others.

Advantage: Tie

When paddling a SUP in shallow water or near rocks, you always have to be careful not to bend or break the fins. Most kayaks, unless they have a rudder, don’t have this weak point. In any event, most kayak rudders can be raised as you approach shore.

Advantage: Kayak

SUPs have a convenient handle in the middle of the board, which allows you to easily carry the board by your side. If you prefer, you can also easily carry the board by holding it above your head with both hands. Kayaks are a little more cumbersome, and some of the longer kayaks are appreciably heavier.

Advantage: SUP

Storage Space
Kayaks often include watertight compartments and hatches in the stern and sometimes the bow where you can stow gear, clothing, and food. Bungee rigging in front of the kayak allows you to keep essentials like a map and water within easy reach. To store gear on a SUP, you need to buy a bungee kit for the deck, but not all boards are set up for deck rigging.

Advantage: Kayak

All-Around Fitness
Kayaking will give your shoulders and arms a good, high-repetition workout. Paddling on a SUP, however, works your entire body, especially your core. You may have also seen people practicing different yoga and fitness routines while out on the water. This can be fun, especially when done in a group.

Advantage: SUP

Kids and Dogs
The deck area of a SUP is fairly large—big enough to accommodate a child or even a dog in addition to an adult paddler. You probably don’t want to go superlong distances this way, but for short excursions it can be a lot of fun. Kayak cockpits are usually more confined and are not big enough for an additional kid or pet.

Advantage: SUP

In terms of touring or sightseeing, both sports have their advantages. On a SUP, you’re standing and can therefore see farther. On the other hand, when kayaking, you can sit back, relax, and maybe even pull out an outdoor camera and snap some photos. If you’re nervous about balance, you’ll likely be focused on that when using a stand up paddleboard, and won’t have as much time to appreciate your surroundings.

Advantage: Tie

Long-Distance Paddling
People have paddled their SUPs surprisingly long distances. Having said that, many kayaks, especially the 16-footers, include storage compartments for gear and are better suited for long-distance travel. You’ll also find that the double-blade configuration of a kayak paddle is less fatiguing and more energy efficient over the course of an hours-long trek.

Advantage: Kayak

Ease for Beginners
Almost anyone can jump into a recreational kayak and start paddling. SUPs have a slightly steeper learning curve, though. It might take a little practice as you learn the best way to stand up, paddle, and maneuver the board.

Advantage: Kayak

Cool Factor
Kayaks are a blast to paddle. They can take you anywhere. But let’s face it, everyone takes notice when they look out and see someone standing in the middle of a lake or on a river. SUPs are generating a lot of buzz right now.

Advantage: SUP

There is a lot that sets Harbour Ridge apart from other clubs on the Treasure Coast. The unmatched waterfront lifestyle combined with the beautiful spacious homes and the newly opened Lakeside Spa, Tennis & Fitness Center constantly garner headlines and accolades in the area. However, a true hidden gem at Harbour Ridge is the work of Mike Malizia, the clubs private golf instructor.

The Harbour Ridge Golf Academy offers it all – the full swing, short game, mental management, course management and green-reading. This summer he’s also offering camps for elite juniors looking to earn college scholarships and possibly play this game for a living.

The 46-year-old Malizia knows a little bit about playing the game for a living. He played in five PGA Tour events, including the U.S. Open, and 18 Tour events during his career and made the transition from player to instructor in 2003. Malizia has a lot of help these days through the constant technological advances and even tour pros are beginning to take notice of his teaching ability

Malizia was recently on hand for Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando working with tour pro, and Stuart, FL native, Derek Fathauer. They spent Monday working on the technical aspects of the game, refining Fathauer’s fundamentals. Tuesday, it was concentrating on hitting “creative shots” as they prepared for the tournament.

A Lead Coach with NBC and the Golf Channel Academy, Malizia uses the most advanced equipment and analysis software available from TrackMan Golf to V1 Sports/Interactive Frontiers to evaluate each of his students’ swing and ensure proper club fitting. Harbour Ridge members enjoy full access to these renowned golf training and learning programs, whether they are just learning the game or looking to break 70.

Home to two of the best courses in South Florida, Harbour Ridge is the perfect place for Malizia to base his academy. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or always wanted to learn the game, the courses at Harbour Ridge will meet your expectations.

Single digit handicappers will feel welcome in this Florida golf community near Stuart in Palm City, Florida. The challenge of the game encompasses the undulating fairways, and their strategically placed sand traps and greens. Here, the natural landscape buffers add interest and command respect from even the best golfers on the course.
For beginners, the course design has been thoughtfully planned to forgive a wayward swing. Wide landing areas and easily accessible greens are a welcome sight for those who would prefer bird watching along the course, rather than worry about making birdies.
