Harbour Ridge is excited to announce a new addition to the golf community – Eagle’s Bay Indoor Golf Simulator. The new indoor golf simulator offers a unique experience that is very similar to playing on the course. Club Members can now take a lesson, play around with friends and improve their swing at Eagle’s Bay. Discover what the Harbour Ridge Golf Pros had to say about this innovative amenity.

What prompted Harbour Ridge to add the Golf Simulator room?

Harbour Ridge’s established Golf Academy recently advised the community to invest in this top-of-the-line golf technology. The Foresight Sports, GC Hawk is an overhead-mounted launch monitor that provides the game’s most accurate performance data. The GC Hawk delivers accuracy with its state-of-the-art imaging technology. Golf instructors believe that the simulator will better portray their lesson approach by club and ball data. With its massive ball capture range, the simulator will hone in on Members’ ability, consistency, and skill in the sport.

Is the Golf Simulator only for experienced golfers?

A common misconception with the simulator is that you must be a Golf Pro to use it, however, that is not the case. All golfers and non-golfers alike can find a way to benefit from the use of the simulator. The user-friendly, GC Hawk captures shots from players of both right or left-handedness and with every club in your bag. Golf staff recommends bringing your clubs and are fully equipped for training Members on how to use the simulator. Club Members will have a solid grasp on using the simulator after just a few rounds.

How does the experience of using the simulator compare to golfing on a course?

Like many other sports, having a good day on the course is heavily reliant on the weather. GC Hawk brings the joy of golfing indoors where you can play no matter what the weather conditions are that day. The true-to-life game experience delivers a whole new level of freedom and flexibility. Club golf instructors are looking forward to focusing more time on the key issues holding their Members back without having to worry about canceled lessons due to poor weather conditions. One exciting feature Members can look forward to is the “Internet Conditions” feature, allowing you to play the course you choose with the same weather conditions for that given day.

How many people can use the Golf Simulator at once?

If you’re looking to enjoy a night of golf with friends, the golf simulator can host up to four people at one time. Look out for upcoming special events where the Golf Academy will host leagues, closest to the pin, and long drive contests that will allow multiple Members of the community to participate at one time. The indoor golf simulator offers 18 courses to choose from and has plans of adding two courses to the library each season based on the community’s feedback.

Evolution of an Individual Sport

Traditionally, golf has always been played as an individual sport. The independent nature of this game has historically driven athletes to compete by themselves. Players who golf individually are scored on their performance alone, their score and rank do not rely on any other golfer. Many professional golfers have reached mass success by playing independently. Even though the customs of this sport appear to be deeply rooted in tradition, the game of golf has begun to evolve. Discovering that they enjoy the sense of comradery and fellowship when playing on a team, golfers are choosing to compete in teams rather than by themselves. There is a strong sense of unity and collaboration when playing on a team, and players are starting to find this mentality refreshing. Golfing on a team also creates a more easygoing and leisurely atmosphere to enjoy with their friends and families.

Rise of Team-Based Tournaments

Rapidly gaining popularity, team-based tournaments are often differentiated by the number of golfers on a team. Teams can be divided a multitude of ways: pairs, groups of fours, couples (man and woman), and various other group formats. Upon completing the course or tournament, the team’s scores are calculated by taking the top two individual player scores from each hole and finding the overall average. These team-based tournaments serve as an excellent introduction for amateur golfers wanting to compete. By competing on a team, amateur golfers can learn how a tournament is structured while simultaneously golfing with more experienced players. The PNC Championship is one of many renowned team-based tournaments. Played at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, 20 Major Champions team up and golf with a family member, usually a child or parent. The championship provides an opportunity for professionals to share part of their lives with their families in a fun, yet competitive setting.

Community Connections Through Teams

While members enjoy playing golf independently, Harbour Ridge has found that playing on a team is a great way for golfers to connect and engage in the community. The private golf club hosts a myriad of team-based tournaments throughout the year on two USGA recognized, championship golf courses, designed by Pete & P.B. Dye and Joe Lee, and redesigned by Bobby Weed in 2018. Team-based tournaments are held throughout the year, some of which members are encouraged to play alongside a guest. These competitions range anywhere from single-day member-guest tournaments to member-only championship tournaments. A favorite among members is the annual Husband & Wife Championship where couples go head-to-head. In addition to annual team-based tournaments, Harbour Ridge members enjoy weekly tournaments in which different days of the week are designated for ladies, men, and couple’s teams. Regarding this past season, Director of Golf, Joe Beezup, stated that “the increased level of activity on our golf courses hasn’t been seen since the early 2000s.” Because of these team-based tournaments and competitions, the Harbour Ridge golf community is thriving and has never been more connected.

What are those odds? 67 Million To 1 to be exact.

The average American golfer makes a hole-in-one once every 12,000 rounds. On Saturday, May 8, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club member Patsy Harris, defeated those odds by a long shot.

Patsy, a member at Harbour Ridge since 2014, decided to start her day off with a final 18-hole round of golf for the 2021 season. Little did she know it would end in 67 million to 1 odds! She teed off the River Ridge #10 at 8:16 a.m. and just under an hour later, using a 5 hybrid from 105 yards, she made her second-ever hole-in-one on hole #14. Once Patsy got to the 7th hole at 11:35 a.m., she thought it best to use her 6 hybrid from 102 yards. She swings, she…SINKS IT! Incredibly, she successfully sunk her second (and third-ever) hole-in-one; same round, same course, same day!

Patsy, who calls herself a “bogey” golfer with a handicap of 19, said, “I am always just happy to clear the hazards and get the ball on the green; none of our Par 3s are easy!” My golf group, ‘The Queen of the Greens’, was so excited after the first hole-in-one — high fiving and taking photos. “After the second, I was in shock!” Members of her foursome that day included Jill Kelly, Barbara Alesi, and Elaine McCusker.

Patsy also said she and her husband Andy are a golfing family. They have been playing golf together for nearly 50 years. Their two sons, David and Daniel, are single-digit golfers who have a total of 3-hole-in-ones between them (GO, MOM!). She’s proud to now have passed their love for golf down to their four grandsons, ages 13, 10, 9, and 6. The 13-year-old is already on track to catch up with Grandma with his first hole-in-one this past November. “Golfing is a passion for me—I love it in all its forms, and I am still working on my game.”

The Pete and P.B. Dye designed River Ridge course has hosted numerous qualifying rounds for USGA championships, including the U.S. Open. The River Ridge course boasts one of the highest slope ratings in all of Florida, and can be played from any of five sets of tees to accommodate all handicap levels.
