Local artist Geoffrey Smith draws inspiration from the natural world around him, using it to create statues that are so lifelike you’d expect them to breathe. You might recognize his design of the sailfish fountain jumping out of the water- it’s the same one that stands in Downtown Stuart as a cultural symbol of the city – the Sailfish Capital of the World!

The Elliott Museum

While this Hutchinson Island classic is known for its history displays and classic car collection, it houses art of all kinds! Take some time to enjoy the significant collection of classic cars, trucks, bicycles, and boats; baseball memorabilia; local history; Americana; a variety of art; a tribute to actress Frances Langford; and even a Foucault Pendulum.

Fish House Art Center

When you’re driving along Dixie Highway, keep an eye out for this brightly colored building that serves as an art studio to many! Multiple stores call the Fish House their home, including Aya Fiber Studio, Marker 23 Gallery and Tattoo Studio, and Clay Space. Take a silk dyeing class, watch an artist at work on their craft, and peruse great fashion pieces and statement jewelry at one of the many shops here.

Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast

The staff at this museum knows that some mediums are to be consumed directly and as hands-on as possible, which is why exhibits here are completely interactive! From learning of the life cycle of a butterfly at the butterfly garden to exploring a recreation of a fire station, this is a learning experience that everyone can truly grasp!

Court House Cultural Center

Heading down Ocean Boulevard, you’ll find one of the centerpieces of arts and production within Martin County. Run by The Arts Council of Martin County, the Court House Cultural Center hosts gallery showings, productions, and events that showcase art in all its forms. January should provide anglers with lots of exciting action this year. Fishing in deeper water will provide you with better results on most days. Working your lures and baits much slower will also give you a better chance at success. Fish tend to become lethargic in cold water and are slow in moving to strike at lures. Finding water that is a couple of degrees warmer than the surrounding area can also give you an edge on finding fish. Water temperatures have been mild so far.

According to Captain Charlie, Redfish can be found around docks and sitting on the flats on warm, sunny days. Try a DOA shrimp around mangroves and docks for reds. The trout bite has greatly improved this past year and it should continue to get better. Snook season is closed for now and it will continue to be catch and release. Bridges, docks and the inlets will be the best opportunities to catch snook this month.

Bridges will continue to produce sheepshead, black drum, croakers, sand perch and bluefish. Most of the anglers on the catwalks prefer live or frozen shrimp for these fish. The drum and sheepshead have once again arrived early, and action has already been steady for these tasty fish. The inlet and turning basin will be full of bluefish, jacks and mackerel this month. Live or dead bait on a jig head will give you plenty of action along with silver spoons or shiny lures. Around seawalls, channel edges or deeper structure you can find grouper for catch and release action in January. Pompano fishing will depend on water temperatures for their location, but they will be in the area throughout the winter. Surf anglers will be targeting these fish on days when the beach is fishable. Enjoy fishing in January on the Treasure Coast!

The weather forecast is looking great for fishing, as well. The late summer atmosphere, along with the Atlantic Ridge Axis shifting from Central to South Florida means that the air and water temperatures are less likely to produce storms. Enjoy a few weeks of warm blue waters and mostly sunny blue skies.
The fishing and the weather make it great to spend time outdoors. One of the best possible places to cast is near Harbour Ridge – located on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The lifestyle of this private community is centered around the water and second to none.

Hiking through South Florida is a treat that grants wildlife animal sightings, treks through wild and nearly untouched land, and beautiful landscapes. Residents and members at Harbour Ridge are lucky enough to have this all in their backyards. If you’re looking for the newest place to try out your hiking shoes, try one of these parks and trails.

South Fork Trail at Halpatiokee Regional Park

As the largest park in Martin County, it hosts over 65 acres of land. Here you can hike miles of landscapes from pine flat woods to scrub. When you’re hiking, you’ll also come in contact with the south fork of the St. Lucie River on occasion. The views are beautiful.

Indian Riverside Park

This gorgeous, expansive park offers everything from boardwalk trails alongside the waterfront to winding paths that take you throughout the park. Along the way, take younger children to the Children’s Museum, or see if you can’t get a glimpse of the Tuckahoe Mansion.

Poppleton Creek Dog Park Trails

What’s more fun than running through miles of trails, viewing endangered ecosystems, and coming face to face with animals unique to the area? Doing all that with your dog! Aside from the hiking trails that take you through wetlands, scrub Flatwoods, and sand pine scrub, there’s a dog park that hosts separate areas for both big breeds and small breeds and a dog washing station.

Veterans Memorial Bridge

Okay, so it’s not technically a trail, but it does have the supreme views and exercise value that these other trails do. Walk it in the morning to watch the sunrise over the water and make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife such as ospreys and hawks! Run it later in the afternoon for a workout that will really put you in a sweat!

Harbour Ridge

If you’re looking for hiking trails that highlight Florida’s nature and wild beauty, there aren’t any better than the ones at Harbour Ridge. The miles of trails cut through the neighborhood, making them perfect both for an evening walk with friends or an early morning run. Having received the Outstanding Florida Community Award from Audubon International, you’ll be able to catch glimpses of all kinds of wildlife, ranging from bald eagles to river otters. Your hiking doesn’t have to stay on the land-the community’s location by the St. Lucie River means that you can explore twisted mangrove paths and river trails by kayak.

There are certain rules to living in Florida – not traditional laws or regulations, but just things that you do to make life easier in the Sunshine State. It might be off-kilter anywhere else, but here, we do some things differently. Whether you’re shopping in Miami or enjoying all that Harbour Ridge on the Treasure Coast offers, you’ll see Floridians following these rules.

Flip-Flops are basically the official state footwear

In Florida, it’s almost always the perfect weather to wear flip-flops. As a result, you’ll find that most people wear them every day. Why dress up in loafers and sneakers when you can feel the sun on your toes? Whether you’re running errands, grabbing a bite to eat, or heading to the beach, flip-flops are more than appropriate footwear when you live in the Sunshine State.

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach

Here in Florida, sunscreen and sunglasses are essential. Florida is known for having on average over 200 sunny days a year. For most people here, their morning routine includes a quick layer of sunscreen and grabbing their sunglasses when heading out the door.

Learning to swim is just as important as learning to walk

Floridians are all about the water. Whether they swim, fish, paddleboard, or stroll by the beach, their lives revolve around the water. People here spend lots of time outdoors – it’s a way of life.

Nothing makes a picnic like a Publix sub sandwich

This grocery store with the silly name is thought of fondly by all Floridians. You’ll hear residents rave about their “Pub Subs,” made to perfection in Publix’s deli. Grab a bag of chips and some juice, and you have the perfect picnic platter! Once you have one, you’re sure to crave another.
