Through their combined experiences, the locals have found how to make the best of Florida with a few simple rules. Make sure to pay attention, take notes, and see what you need to know to live in Florida.

1. Enjoy The Great Weather

This unwritten rule is one of our most important! Florida is called ‘The Sunshine State’ for a reason! The Treasure Coast alone has an average of 237 sunny days a year, which means that you have an average of 237 days a year to swim, boat, fish, or enjoy the great weather.

2. The State Uniform Is Simple

Locals joke about how Florida is one of the few places where it’s okay to wear flip-flops to a nice dinner, but we love this unwritten rule and our unofficial ‘Florida Uniform’. Whether you’re heading out for cocktails with friends at South Fork Table and Bar or going to a show at the Sunrise Theatre, simply throw on your best Lilly Pulitzer and your favorite flip flops and you’re good to go!

3. Bring Your Beach Gear Wherever You Go

Here in Florida, the locals always make sure to have towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a good beach read in the car. You never know when you’re going to stumble across an amazing secluded beach, or find the right spot to take a dip in the cool water. It’s an unwritten rule that’s not hard to follow!

4. Live Alongside Wildlife!

Some of our natural neighbors include egrets, dolphins, otters, manatees, and sea turtles! Bring a pair of binoculars with you when you hike trails such as the ones at Kiplinger Nature Preserve – you never know whom you might run into! For a look at nature that’s just as close but somewhat tamer, head to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary!

5. Get The Kids Outside!

Technology isn’t as big a lure for our kids here in Florida. How can it be when there are white sand beaches to find, blue waves to surf, rivers to kayak, and trails to hike and explore?

6. Your Neighbors Have Your Back!

Floridian friendliness is legendary! Whenever you walk into a store, everyone smiles and welcomes you in. Locals are willing to give you directions and help you get to where you need to go, or mention where some of the best fishing spots in the area are.

7. Expect A Surprise Around Every Corner!

If there’s one thing that Florida isn’t, it’s ordinary. A visit to the gas station reveals a food truck selling some of the best acai bowls in town, or a quiet weekend can be filled with concerts, live events, and demonstrations at one of the local parks in the area. Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to explore – you never know what you’ll find!

8. Try Something New!

Florida has some beautiful nature, but did you know about its amazing culinary scene? Step into a restaurant like King Neptune’s and enjoy some of the freshest caught mahi mahi that you’ve ever enjoyed, or pay a visit to Fruits and Roots for vegan bites! Head to the Fort Pierce Farmer’s Market, and you can even sample local honey, produce, and even flowers grown and made by locals.

9. Don’t Be Afraid To Relax

There’s so much to do within the area that you can feel like you have to fill your days with it. There’s nothing wrong with kicking back in a hammock and watching a sunny day go by. After all, when’s the next time that you’ll get to do it again? (Tomorrow, of course!)

10. Live In the Heart of It All

With South Florida being so action packed, the residents like to stick close by the area so that they don’t miss anything. You want to be in a community that lets you enjoy the best of the area’s offerings while offering its own private services and amenities. You also want to be in a community that’s close to all of the great things that the Treasure Coast offers. Check out the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery in Fort Pierce, which details the history of one of the famed Highwaymen artists, and Basin Seafood & Fresh Fish Markets, where you can get the best fish sandwich in Port Salerno. Don’t miss a chance to see a Spring Training game at First Data Field either! That’s how locals get to have the best of both worlds, and one reason why many residents call Harbour Ridge home.
